Perth’s Fair City Santos have been crowned Scottish Futsal champions.

The Bell’s Sports Centre based squad defeated Edinburgh’s Wattcell 7-3 in the showdown final, held at the DISC in Dundee.

Goals from captain Scott Mollison, James Yates, Ross Chisholm and two each for John McLean and Rhys Davies secured the win.

Manager Mark Potter was delighted with the performance across the weekend and said: “The team played very well on Sunday in both games.

“They are becoming more of a futsal team and have developed a better understanding of the intensity and tactical aspects required to be successful in the sport.

“Both matches were of a high demand and especially in the final the team raised their level of performance against a very good Wattcell side.

“Santos’ experience of UEFA Cups and national Finals has helped, but now every team in the country has the opportunity to develop at a quicker rate.

“That’s thanks to the new range of coach education opportunities and the involvement of many technically and tactically gifted players and teams from outwith Scotland in the leagues.

“It wont be long before national competitions see more of the teams catching up with the Perth lads so it’s up to us to try to stay ahead of the chasing pack.”

Santos, who secured the Perth league title recently, now turn attention to the national finals in May.

The winner will represent Scotland at the UEFA Futsal Cup.

“The current group of players have shown a huge amount of commitment over the last couple of years in particular,” Potter said. “This has been the key to the success.

“Without the desire to train hard, practice skills and improve tactically the team would not have developed to the current level.

“The Perth League has been won, so now the focus will be on the National Finals at the end of May.

“It’s a long way off so the squad will be keeping in shape with some friendly matches and training.

“There’s a League Cup competition to consider and some of the players will be involved with the national team matches against Gibraltar at Bell’s in Perth on April 27 and 28.

“There’s absolutely no doubt the team would like another stab at UEFA Futsal Cup.”

Potter added: “Getting the first win at UEFA level by a Scottish Futsal League representative remains one of the few challenges still to be achieved and Santos would very much like to be the team that does that.

“However, no matter which team qualifies for the event in August they will definitely have a better chance thanks to the ever-increasing level of competition across Scotland.”

*A number of players from the Perth league were also selected to play in a North against South match on finals day
